Here's a Newt I started a while back. Fiscal conservatives haven't had a dog in the fight since Reagan. America is like a drug addict. In 2010 we had an "intervention" by the Tea Party taking back control of the House. But it seems we're going to have to hit rock bottom before we realize the only way out is to quit cold turkey. I can see why they compare her to Audrey Hepburn. Eyes are one of my favorite things to paint and hers are some of the best even at this young age. This guy would've been great back in 2008 with our only other option being the most liberal conservative in the Senate. But it's 2012. We've had three years of the most liberal president in U.S. history. He had two years of democratic control in both houses. Yesterday John Boehner became the 61st Speaker of The U.S. House of Representatives. One of the things I particularly like about him is that he helped Newt Gingrich draft the Contract with America back in '94. Other than that I don't know much about him. It was a huge relief to see Pelosi's 4 year reign end. Here's a sketch of Jeff Bridges from the movie True Grit. I highly recommend it. While he was really good in the movie (and I hope he gets another Oscar) the standout to me was the girl that played Mattie Ross. She did an excellent job helping you believe that a 14 year old would and could hire a gun to avenge her father's death. The Coen brothers didn't disappoint either. Three things I find really difficult to obtain likeness on are females, children, and hands. This one has all three. I saw this photograph and just had to try it though. At the same time I'm trying a different technique which is making it hard as well. I need to do portraits a lot more as they take constant measurement and very precise shapes and angles to get it to resemble the reference. Usually when they want me to do one of these they'll have some production stills or some kind of photography to use but in this case they didn't so I decided to paint a portrait. Here's the sketch that I turned in yesterday. I'm kind of disappointed because I wanted to work on it more but ended up getting kind of busy with other work and just had to leave it as it was. This is my first drawing for the class. Unfortunately I won't be painting this one. My online oil painting class started yesterday. The instructor gave us a few references to choose from and I went with this guy. I'm trying to create a good likeness. I've been wanting to caricature our current president for a while now. I like what I've done so far for a couple of reasons. I really pushed the exaggeration while maintaining a bit of the likeness on this one. I'm rarely able to do that. I got a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen for my birthday this year and I really like it. I haven't used it that much though. J.P. and I recently had a healthy lunch debate about a new movie coming out over whether or not it would be good or just super cheese. I'm hoping for something at least in between. This was a quick value study I did from a concept sketch of Mace Windu in the animated Clone Wars series. Luke let me borrow the DVDs of the season and included was a booklet with a lot of the artwork done in preparation of the series. I scanned the sketch in with the new scanner. I found an almost identical photograph of Samuel L. Jackson in his Mace get up so that helped a ton. In a bid to make myself sketch and paint more traditionally I picked up a $50 scanner from Fry's Electronics. I only mention Fry's because this would've been done a lot sooner if Office Depot or Best Buy carried flatbed scanners anymore but they don't. So, I had to drive 40 miles to get one.

I'm probably the last person in the world to caricature this guy. I'm not really happy with the exaggerations but I'm more excited about how I was able to manipulate the acrylic so that it acts like watercolor. This helps me establish values in an "underpainting" so that you can apply more and more paint to it on top. Here are three versions of Uma Thurman from Kill Bill. They're all from the same reference picture. I was actually ready to paint the one on the left which was my initial sketch but something told me to go back and try again. The one in the middle is the one I drew second. The creator of the school I went to for caricature started streaming live video of himself sketching so that people could all sketch with each other at the same time over the web. It's a truly unbelievable concept. I think there are anywhere from 100 to 150 people sketching at the same time. I watched a few before I actually started sketching with them.
